You're Losing Jobs Before the Phone Ever Rings

The 'invisibility leak' is the revenue you lose before a customer ever calls — and most tradesmen never see it happen. Here's where it leaks and how to plug it.

By Kenny Lewis

Every tradesman knows the leaks they can see. The quote that didn't close. The customer who ghosted. The job that went sideways. Those sting because you watched them happen.

The leak that's actually costing you the most is the one you never see — the jobs you lose before the phone ever rings. I call it the invisibility leak, and it's the quietest, most expensive hole in a trade business.

Here's the thing about it: there's no missed call in your log. No voicemail. No "let me think about it." The customer searched, found three other guys, called one of them, and got their problem solved — and you have no idea any of it happened. The money just never showed up, and you can't lose what you never knew was there.

Let me walk you through where it leaks.

Leak #1: You don't show up

A customer has a problem right now. They search "[your trade] near me." Up comes a map with three businesses, some star ratings, and a couple of websites. They call from that list.

If you're not on it, you don't exist for that job. Doesn't matter that you do better work, charge a fair price, or have 13 years of experience. You weren't in the room when the decision got made.

Most tradesmen have never actually checked this. Do it right now — open an incognito window and search your service and your town. If you're not in that map box, every single one of those searches is a job going to somebody else, every day, and you never see a single one of them.

Leak #2: They don't trust what they see

Say you do show up. Now the customer's sizing you up in about four seconds. What do they see?

If it's a profile with no photos and three reviews next to a competitor with eighty — they call the eighty. If your website looks like it was built in 2014 and won't load right on their phone, they bounce. If your information doesn't match across Google, Facebook, and your site, something feels off and they move on.

None of that is about your work. It's about whether a stranger believes you're the real deal in the few seconds they spend deciding. That belief is built — or lost — before you ever talk to them.

Leak #3: The call never gets answered

This is the brutal one. You did everything right — you showed up, they trusted you, they called. And you were on a roof, under a sink, hands full. It went to voicemail.

Nobody leaves a voicemail anymore. They hang up and call the next guy. That call was a booked job, maybe the best one of your week, and it went straight to a competitor without a trace. After hours is even worse — the burst pipe at 10pm isn't waiting until morning. They're calling down the list until somebody picks up.

Why this leak is so dangerous

Every other leak in your business announces itself. You feel the lost quote. You remember the customer who didn't call back. This one is silent. You can run a busy, "successful" shop and still be bleeding the majority of your potential jobs out of these three holes — and feel fine, because you never see the blood.

That's exactly why it goes unfixed for years. You can't fix a leak you don't know you have.

Plugging all three

The good news: these are fixable, and the fixes stack on each other.

  • Show up — claim and fully build out your Google Business Profile, get found in the map, get your name and number consistent everywhere.
  • Earn the trust — real photos, real reviews, a fast site that works on a phone, information that matches across the web.
  • Answer every call — make sure every call gets picked up, day or night, even when your hands are full. A missed call should never be the reason a job walks.

Do those three and you stop losing jobs in the dark. You don't have to do more marketing or chase more leads — you just stop pouring the ones you already earned onto the ground.

Finding and plugging the invisibility leak is the whole reason I built Boltarra — after watching it drain my own pool business for years before I understood it. The free Online Presence Audit is where we map exactly where you're leaking and what it's costing, in plain numbers. It’s free — no catch, and it’s yours to keep.
